caspar-david-friedrich-the-monk-by-the-sea1On January 25, VAMA alumnus Jane Boddy received the Research Master’s Thesis Prize, awarded by VU University for the outstanding research MA thesis in the humanities of the last two years. The jury report has this to say about Jane’s thesis:

Mönch am Meer is a famous painting of 1810 by Caspar David Friedrich, the interpretation of which is still a topic of discussion, either together with independently of Friedrich’s Abtei im Eichwald. In her thesis In Search of a Way Through the Landscape: Interpreting Mönch am Meer by C.D. Friedrich, Jane Boddy (Visual Arts, Media and Architecture) conducts a thorough analysis of both works. She discovered a sepia that seems to provide the key to their interpretation. […] The jury was much impressed by the way in which the winner was able to elucidate a much-discussed problem, by her ability to evaluate interpretations independently, by the discovery of new sources, and her knack of taking the reader on a creative quest with an unexpected dénouement […].”

Many congratulations, Jane! May you long continue to regale us with unexpected dénouements!
